Beyond the resume
Putting together a resume can be a daunting task. We sift through years of employment in hopes of crafting our best selves on paper. But, the truth is.... there's a part of us that never gets described in that one-page narrative.
Let's face it, our careers don't always tap into our core. There's an "extra-curricular" side of us that is crafty, philanthropic and expressive -- and both sides should be embraced.
Don't get me wrong, I’m a strong believer in professional development. However, I also believe it is equally important to nurture our hobbies and exercise our talents outside of work. We dedicate SO much time molding ourselves professionally, that we often neglect pastimes that ignite our inner-selves.
Remember the things we used to enjoy before life forced us into “adulting”? Or the things we vowed "I could do this every single day, if it paid the bills". Those are the activities that either help us decompress or feed our passions. Either way, it's important for us not to lose sight of them.
This year, I've decided to get back to doing the things I’ve always loved, beyond my 9-to-5 and welcome new interests along the way.
Even if it's not a paid gig, let's find a way to do things we love, and welcome new interests along the way! There's a musician, a singer, painter, dancer, athlete, photographer, writer, chef or make up artist in all of us!
So, if you’re like me and you’ve allowed life to get in the way -- I encourage you to pick up that old instrument, start singing again, take that dance class and start catering to YOU…..beyond your resume.
